Celebration Of Doug Banker |
| February 4, 2010 |
| |
|
On Thursday, February 4, 2010, the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company presented Garrison resident Doug Banker with a Lifesaver award for his actions from November 23, 2009. On that night, Doug, his daughter Jeannie and son-in-law John Miottel were at the Garrison train station and heard a faint voice calling for help coming from the water. They walked down the pier at the Garrison Yacht Club and found a man in the water. Doug and John reached down and each grabbed a hand of the victim. At one point, they fed a tree branch down to the man and hoped he would grab it in order to pull him into shallower water. Unfortunately, the victim could not understand or follow their directions. While this was taking place, Jeannie was calling 911.
After being dispatched by Putnam 911, Assistant Chiefs Joe Surace and Rodney Tudor arrived and took over the task of holding the victim until other Garrison VFC members arrived and provided a method of lifting the man out of the water. Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated the victim for exposure and transported to an area hospital.
Without the actions of Doug and his family, the victim would have, without doubt, lost consciousness and been swept away by the current. We celebrate the Bankers’ quick and selfless action.
On the night, Doug also received a proclamation from Richard Shea, Town Supervisor for the Town of Philipstown, as well as State Senator Vincent Liebell.
