Garrison Fire Company Hosts Fire Police Course

December 8, 2010
By Annie Chesnut - PCNR

During November, the Garrison Volunteer Fire Company was the host for Putnam and Northern Westchester counties for the 21-hour New York State Fire Police course.

Seven members of the Garrison Volunteer Fire Department participated in the classes held in the training classroom at the Garrison Fire Station on Route 9. The instructor was Dan Valentine.

Fire Police members are usually active firefighters within a department who are additionally trained to manage safety issues, traffic control, and overall scene protection and support at each incident, when and where required by the department chief.

The Fire Police operate as part of the overall Emergency Response Team of Firefighters, EMS, Local and State Police, and other organizations as the incident may require. Such incidents include, among others, structure fires, traffic accidents, and hazardous material spills.

At the Dec. 2 Philipstown Town Board Meeting, members of the Garrison Fire Department who had successfully passed the course and been certified eligible for the Office of Fire Police took their Oath of Office, administered by Town Supervisor Richard Shea. The Fire Police members participating included: Kirby Brown, Captain; Sarah Geer; John Giardiello; Peter Richter; Allan Simmons; Joseph Surace; and Peter von Bergen.
